In celebration of Hangul Day, KoreanLearners.com Institute organized a special Korean Calligraphy Workshop, bringing together students, language enthusiasts, and art lovers to honor the beauty of the Korean script 한글 (Hangul).
We had the privilege of hosting the session with Kholod Elsayad -TalkTalk Korea 2022 Grand Award Winner in Calligraphy, A talented calligraphy artist and cultural educator known for her graceful brushwork and deep passion for Korean aesthetics.
(The picture is the one she won the calligraphy for)
Her expertise and warm teaching style created a calm and creative environment that inspired everyone to express themselves through Hangul art.
Kholod introduced herself warmly and shared some of her beautiful calligraphy craftwork, inspiring students right from the start.
Participants learned how Hangul reflects balance, harmony, and simplicity, and how these same principles are beautifully expressed through Korean calligraphy.
Later, she presented the tools and materials used in calligraphy, explaining each item’s purpose along with possible substitutes that participants could easily find at home, making the session accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Kholod then guided everyone through the history and emotional depth behind each stroke, helping participants understand that writing in Hangul is not just about letters, but about rhythm, balance, and feeling.
She went on to explain the three main styles of Korean calligraphy, sharing the unique beauty and significance of each. From the graceful style to the more modern and expressive brush forms, she described how each style carries its own rhythm and personality.
Kholod also shared her personal favorite style, explaining how its flow and harmony reflect the essence of Korean aesthetics. Students, on the other hand, enjoyed experimenting with all three, many especially loved the elegant curves and expressive strokes that made each word feel alive on paper.
After the introduction, the hands-on practice began. Students prepared their calligraphy sets, tested brush movements, and slowly began forming Hangul characters under Kholod’s guidance. The workshop was filled with concentration, laughter, and soft conversations, a true blend of art and community.
Even though there were a few minor network challenges, the students’ enthusiasm never faded. They patiently followed along and shared their progress on screen, turning the virtual space into a real creative studio.
As the session came to an end, students proudly showcased their beautiful calligraphy works, each one unique and heartfelt. Some wrote their favorite Korean words, others created inspiring phrases but all reflected sincerity and joy.
We closed the event with words of gratitude to our wonderful host, Kholod Elsayad, for guiding us through such a meaningful journey, and to our students for their dedication and positive energy throughout the session.
The workshop ended with smiles, laughter, and heartfelt messages from our wonderful participants. Despite the network challenges, everyone stayed connected till the end, filling the session with warmth and appreciation.
